The Camino Real originated as a connection route between the ancient court of Nájera and the monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla, crossing our valley for eighteen kilometers that pass among hundreds of small vineyards, ancient Celtiberian and Roman settlements and villages such as Badarán and Berceo.
For nearly two centuries, between the 9th and the 11th, Nájera was established as the court of the Kingdom of Pamplona and Nájera, and monarchs, nobles, courtiers, jugglers and peasants travelled the Camino Real to the most important religious center of the time, the Suso and Yuso Monasteries, in San Millán de la Cogolla.
Many pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago have taken advantage of the opportunity this road provides to visit these monasteries which are also the birthplace of the Castilian language. Now it represents the chance to take a beautiful three to four hour walk among vineyards. If you want to bear witness to our history, this is the route to encourage you to travel the Camino Real.
